Welcome! 👋

👨‍🎓 Statistician specialized in Artificial Intelligence.

🔭 Data Scientist & Artificial Intelligence Researcher.

🌱 PhD Student in Mathematics and AI, specifically in the intersection between Topological Data Analysis and Machine Learning.

🤔 My main interests are: Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Computer Vision, Data Analysis, and Applied AI. I am passionate about the use of data analysis techniques and AI tools for high impact applications in fields such as health, which is a topic I am particularly interested in and to which I have dedicated most of my work experience.

My story

I'm Victor Toscano Durán, an Artificial Intelligence researcher, and PhD Student at the University of Seville in the Applied Mathematics I, and part of CIMAgroup research team. Previously, I completed my Bachelor's Degree in Statistics at the University of Seville in 2022. Later, I obtained a Master's Degree in Logic, Computation, and Artificial Intelligence in 2023, also at the University of Seville. The PhD is being carried out under the supervision of Prof. Rocío González Díaz, Miguel Ángel Gutiérrez Naranjo, and Dr. Matteo Rucco

During the final year of the bachelor, I started an intership as a data scientist at Andalusian Public Foundation for Health Research Management in Seville (FISEVI), where mainly I performed data analysis applying statistical techniques to clinical data, including the elaboration of reports for medical doctors. At the end of 2022, I briefly worked as a software developer at Solera before joining Glucube (previously named as Igluco Tech), where I was responsible for developing AI models, as well as performing data analysis, for a non-invasive glucose monitoring device, which was successfully launched to the market while I was still part of the company. This change came about because I knew I wanted to focus mainly on artificial intelligence and data analysis.

Since December 2023, I am a pre-doctoral researcher in the Department of Applied Mathematics I at the University of Seville, contracted by the European project REXASI-PRO. My work on the project focuses on optimizing energy consumption in the detection of people and wheelchairs using the YOLO object detection and localization model, employing data reduction techniques. This, in collaboration with colleagues, achieved the preservation of model performance (such as YOLO for person and wheelchair detection), while using only 25% of the training data, resulting in substantial reductions in computation time, cost, and energy consumption. The results have been published on a paper in the Open Research Europe journal.Additionally, I contribute to improving the behavior of robot fleets through topological methods. Related to that, I visited Prof. Maurizio Mongelli and his team from the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) in Genoa, Italy, during October 2024, where I explored the use of computational topology for predicting safe scenarios in robotic simulations using eXplainable Artificial Intelligence techniques, field in which Maurizio Mongelli is an expert. We got a paper accepted into XAI-2025.

Additionally, between April and June 2025 (6th April to 6th June), I visited Prof. Dr. Bastian Rieck and his lab, the AIDOS Lab based in the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. The main objective of this research stay was to use topological tools, such as the Euler Characteristic Transform, in the context of computational healthcare, more specifically in molecule learning tasks, and to find out more about what he was working on, with the aim of creating a fruitful collaboration for the future.

PhD main objective is about exploring how to effectively integrate TDA at different levels of the machine learning process, from feature extraction to the design and evaluation of machine learning techniques and especially neural networks.

In short, I consider myself as a passionate researcher and data scientist with such a nice academic background and experience in the fields of statistics, artificial intelligence, and mathematics. My focus goes beyond merely acquiring knowledge; I am committed to continuous learning and constant improvement, as AI gives no respite. Obviously, if you would like to collaborate or speak about these topics, feel free to email me. I am always happy to work with new people, as well as get to know new ideas.

In my free time, I used to practice sport, such as weighlifting and padel (I would like to do a bit of everything 😀), as well as getting lost in nature.
